Product Description

Bacchus snagged the final cases of a Southern French red today as a nice addition to your holiday table — and for its value.

The 2016 Gerard Bertrand Chateau l’Hospitalet la Clape rouge from the Languedoc is not shopped around much in these parts, although Bertrand is a popular French producer, his upper level wines are only available occasionally in the states and just in small quantities.

By chance, a handful of cases of the 2016 still existed, most likely because, as is the case with many Old World wines, the label doesn’t do it any favors. To our American eyes, we see “Hospital” – in fact, the label is the latin translation of “hospitality” – and the motto of the winery loosely translated to “without wine, there is no hospitality” – now you know.

This rouge is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre – a GSM if you will – one of the most popular and endearing red blends from the south of France. The meaty, velvet hammer of Syrah is enveloped amidst the red berry tinged Grenache, all swallowed up in espresso, pepper, plum and blackberry of the Mourvedre.

Harvested from Bertrand’s estate vineyards high above the Mediterranean Sea, the premium grapes are hand harvested, sorted and destemmed to remove any annoyance of green and tart. The winery is biodynamic and organic.

Spending a year in a mixture of oaks, the wine absorbs the toast and earth, and, upon opening, releases that wonderful first gush of a not-so-subtle cherry kirsch liqueur.

Having traveled the South of France frequently, Bacchus has dined on native dishes and as was often the case, supped on roasts, cassoulet, duck, while more often than not, sipping a generous GSM.

The wine is robust, and its ripened character will serve you well not only as a nice pairing for your table, but a masterful cocktail for your guests.

L’Hospitalet will remind you again as to why there is no hospitality without wine.
