Product Description

Good Morning!

Bacchus hears you when you ponder if you’ve seen this wine before in these pages.

The 2015 Buena Vista The Count resembles The Sheriff, which he featured just two months ago.

Why would a winery produce two similar red wines with sort of the same name? Both the Sheriff and The Count refer to Agoston Haraszthy — who was a Sheriff, yes, but also a count. His story is this: A Hungarian immigrant, eventually settled in San Diego in the 1800s after a brutish bout of Wisconsin winter, traveled to Sonoma and with the thousands of grape vines he brought with him, created Buena Vista Winery.

A man considered the father of California winemaking deserves TWO iconic wines and what grapes he left out of the Sheriff, found their way in The Count.

The Count is heavily anchored by that very American varietal Zinfandel, followed by Carignane, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo, Malbec, Petite Sirah, and god knows what else.

What does this give us? That addicting raisiny, spicey, black pepper mouthful toggling between the lighter Cab Franc and Tempranillo and the heftier Malbec and Petite Sirah.

In other words, it is a roller coaster of tastes, expressions, sensations and aromas in a glass.

Bacchus knows that Zinfandel is generally the wine of choice for the Fourth — its quaffable style and spice a perfect match for the grill, but finding a really good one is hard for under $20 — as much as we consider Zin our own, it’s stubborn to grow and harvest.

The Count is very good — swirl it around, grab a whiff of black cherry, some gamey notes and a hearty mouthful.

At its normal retail price — it is right on and we have no problem selling it for its MSRP — the juice backs it up. But at our MMB price, we think it is the very best value for under $15 available to you this week.
