Product Description

Good Morning!

Bacchus shivered this past weekend when a blast of cold air blew through the region on what should have been a mild and pleasant spring day. The chill reminded him that there’s still plenty of time to enjoy an earthy, dark and flavorful red blend and bowl of hearty stew.

A wine such as the 2010 Quinta da Falorca Lagar Reserva, a Portuguese red blend from Dao, the fine wine region just outside of the Douro.

In all honesty, we haven’t really come across a Portuguese red or white that has disappointed us, and it always causes us to ponder why we don’t carry more.

Portuguese still wines, as opposed to fortified — or Porto — are made from the same grapes, but instead of stopping fermentation with added neutral alcohol to give us Porto, the grapes are fermented traditionally, leaving us with devastatingly deep, rich concentrated reds that live for many years. One thing we have learned, while we have happily found our share of greater value Portuguese reds, many of these estate wines can be pricey. But, when compared to like made international wines, still show value.

The Falorca is made from Touriga Nacional and Tinto Roriz, varietals typical of the region, with an added blend of other lesser known local grapes. Grown on sandy soil above granite or slate, the vines aren’t likely to absorb as much water, therefore concentrating flavor in skins, while keeping berries small. Harvesting is laborious and hard, all hand picked, and the yield for this wine is somewhere in the few hundred cases category.

The result is a wine of density, black berry, plum, anise, spice and tannin. We’re lucky we’ve been given the chance to secure the last cases as the wine enters its prime drinking time.

Falorca is a certified sustainable vineyard, situated between mountain ranges in north central Portugal, so weather spikes are moderated allowing for balanced and predictable ripening each vintage.

Each year that Falorca is produced results in well received and highly graded wines.

Grab a few bottles and enjoy this spring with a cornucopia of pairings, from roasted veggies and beef to a charred salmon or better yet —- some Iberian-style sausages.
